A helpful tip for using iMessage on a iPhone is to turn 'Send As SMS' OFF. It might also be a good idea to turn 'MMS Messaging' OFF. In the Settings app, Go to 'Settings ..Messages .. Send As SMS'.

I was getting all kinds of charges for sending iMessages. If you have the 'default' setting of 'Send As SMS' as ON, and if the iMessage servers are congested ( or perhaps your cell phone provider needs extra cash flow :-| ), then your iMessage goes out as a charged text message.

I was even getting charges communicating with an iPod touch user, even while we were both connecting over Wi-Fi. Figure that! 'Hi .. Hi .. Yup .. K ... Cya ...' -- each one 20 cents! Phoning Bell about this problem, they were totally clueless and just happy to get more money out of me. However, the guy at Apple support was great, and advised to always keep 'Send As SMS' OFF, and said that's what he does with his iPhone.

Also note that if your iMessage fails you just touch the red circle surrounding the "!" mark to the right of the message and you will be prompted to 'Try Again' as an iMessage, or to 'Send as Text Message'.

I no longer get unnecessary charges.

good stuff! I like this post as sound which can be such an integral part to media seems to be overlooked sometimes. I am trained sound designer looking to branch from film into game/app sound design. Any pointers?? I am also learning Objective C app design.

[...] Since we’re taking advantage of the accelerometer for iOS and Android as part of the game play and we also have plans to release to the Desk Top, instead of trying to make the game exactly the same on each platform, we’re tweaking the design so that the end result will have slight differences that enhance the game play based on the strengths of the platform it’s being played upon. We’re currently refining the game play for our first 3D game ‘Big Top Ballet’ for the iPad and iPod touch. In considering the differences between the available screen real estate between the iPad and iPhone/ iPod touch, where appropriate we’re leaning to provide for device specific game play to accomodate the smaller screen size of the iPhone within a universal app download.
Yah- I would agree for itunes only accounts but it's actually through my 'itunesconnect' account that the change from a username to an email address needs to happen. It's just a quirk as a developer using the same id for itunesconnect as itunes. I've submitted to Apple to make the change to the email from the developer end of things.Which reminds me I should follow up.

I recommend you change the apple id to the email address it's associated with. A while back I was prompted to do so in iTunes. It will make your life so much easier.
